Once the horse can turn around the rider without relying on the longe line, we often add side reins to create a channel. It does not restrict the horse’s neck but provides support and stability to help the horse learn to come through the top of the body and bend. This particular horse tends to turn the neck in and throw the shoulder out so we are using the side rein to teach the horse to not fall out when we push and also what the outside rein and contact mean.
