This horse is a lusitano that it short coupled, this makes him tend to shorten the walk and hammer the neck. In this exercise, we are using straight lines on the long side, then curving the horse on the short side. The straight line sends the inside shoulder away and forward, the curve to connect to the hand and lengthen the outside.
The goal is for the horse to connect with the hand so we can start to lengthen the outside and create a curve because the neck is lengthening, this is not possible if the horse is falling in towards us. Once this starts to happen the horse will start to come through the top of the body and the walk will take bigger, longer steps with a relaxed neck.
